Mason's VPN is used for secure remote access to restricted applications or systems. When you connect to Cisco Secure Client VPN you need to specify a VPN Group. Each VPN Group is set up for specific access.
You must be on campus to access the Mesa Tools webpage, tools.mesa.gmu.edu.

What VPN Group Do I Belong To?
Step 1
In a web browser go the Mesa Tools webpage, tools.mesa.gmu.edu.
Step 2
Log in with your Mason NetID and Patriot Pass Password.
Step 3
Scroll to the bottom of the page and look for You are a member of the following Active Directory groups.
Step 4
Look through the list for XX-VPN = Departmental VPN
Step 5
If you have a group similar to the above then you have a departmental VPN and will use that when connecting. If you DO NOT have any groups with the suffix “-VPN”, then you are in the GENERAL VPN. If you do not know what VPN Group you are please contact ITS Support.
How Do I Connect Using My VPN Group?
Note: If you are a student and need to connect to the VPN to access mason.gmu.edu, see below.
Step 1
Open Cisco Secure Client VPN on your computer.
Step 2
Type vpn.gmu.edu/ followed by the name of your VPN Group.
Step 3
Complete the Cisco Secure Client VPN login using Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).
How Do I Connect Using the STUDENT VPN group?
Step 1
Open the Cisco Secure Client.
Step 2
Enter VPN.GMU.EDU/STUDENT then click on Connect.
Step 3
Enter your Mason NetID and Patriot Pass password then click OK.
After successful login, this box will appear briefly to confirm your VPN connection.
Your VPN session duration is 12 hours as long as you have uninterrupted internet access. If you are disconnected, follow steps 1–3 to reconnect.
Step 4
Click on Disconnect if you want to end your VPN session.
Notes: The first number at the bottom of the box is how long you have been on the VPN. The second number is the time remaining for your VPN session. Clicking on the Cisco Secure Client icon will also bring up this box.
WARNING: Your work may be lost if you lose VPN connection.
