Get Started With 2FA Checklist

Here are some quick checklists to make sure you complete all the steps when you:

  • Enroll in 2FA
  • Use 2FA with Web Applications
  • Use 2FA with Cisco Secure Client VPN

Enrolling in 2FA

Before you use 2FA, you must first create your 2FA account and enroll at least one device through the Duo Enrollment process. To complete your enrollment, do the following:

  • If enrolling a smartphone (push notification):
    • Download and install the Duo Mobile app by Duo Security on your smartphone from your device's App Store. The app is used to provide the second factor required during authentication to 2FA-enabled applications and services.
    • Note: When configuring the app, enabling notifications improves your ability to authenticate using Duo Mobile.
  • Enroll your initial device:
    • Smartphone (Duo App)
    • Landline, Office Phone, Text-only Mobile Phone
  • Enroll additional devices:
    • How to Enroll Additional 2FA Devices
    • Note: ITS recommends having an additional device in case your primary device is unavailable. See the List of 2FA Authentication Options.

Using 2FA with Web Applications

After completing enrollment, verify that you can access a 2FA-enabled application or service.

  • Test your 2FA:
    • If you are still logged into the application from initial enrollment, click the logout button.
    • Review the instructions on how to Use 2FA with Web Applications.
    • Navigate to the 2fa.gmu.edu home page, click the 2FA Account Login button, and follow the prompts to log in.
  • If you did not enroll a second device at initial enrollment, enroll an additional device now (e.g., yubikey, tablet, etc.).
    • See How to Enroll Additional 2FA Devices and the List of 2FA Authentication Options.
    • Note: ITS recommends having an additional device in case your primary device is unavailable.

Using 2FA with Cisco Secure Client VPN

After completing enrollment, verify that you can connect to the VPN using the Cisco Secure Client.

  • Download and Install the Cisco Secure Client if you do not already have it on your computer.
    • See How do I install the VPN?
  • Determine your VPN Group for when you log in to Cisco Secure Client VPN.
    • When you connect to Cisco Secure Client VPN you need to specify a VPN Group. Each VPN Group is set up for specific access.
  • Log in to the Cisco Secure Client VPN Client.
    • See How to Use 2FA with VPN
