MATLAB, the language of technical computing, is a programming environment for algorithm development, data analysis, visualization, and numeric computation. Simulink is a graphical environment for simulation and Model-Based Design of multidomain dynamic and embedded systems. MathWorks produces nearly 100 additional products for specialized tasks such as data analysis and image processing.

Terms of Use

George Mason University has a campuswide license for MATLAB, Simulink, and add-on products. Faculty, researchers, and students may use these products for teaching, research, and learning. The license allows individuals to install the products on university-owned equipment, as well as personally-owned computers.

Matlab is available to faculty, staff, and enrolled students on Mason-owned or personally-owned computers.

  • For faculty and staff, the software can only be used for performing software administration, teaching, academic coursework, and non-commercial research use.
  • For students, the software can only be used for academic coursework and non-commercial research use.

How to Access

This application is available in the following technology labs:

  • Computer Labs
    • Fairfax: Johnson Center, Room 342 & Innovation Hall, Room 301
    • Mason Square: Van Metre Building, Room 211
    • Science and Technology: Katherine G. Johnson Hall, Room 250

This software is available online in the Citrix Virtual Lab.

Installation Instructions
Installation Instructions for Users Installing on Mason Owned and Managed Computers

End-User Windows: Download from Software Center

  1. Select the Start button, then Mason System Center, then Software Center.
  2. Under the Applications tab, select MATLAB.
  3. Select Install. The application will download and proceed to install.
  4. Please note: you will still need to license MATLAB after installation by logging into the portal here.

End-User macOS: Download from Self Service

  1. Use spotlight to search for Self Service (or open the Self Service app in your Applications folder).
  2. You will be prompted to enter your Mason NetID and Patriot Pass Password. Software that has been made available to your Mac will be displayed.
  3. Select the Install button located beneath MATLAB and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Please note: you will still need to license MATLAB after installation by logging into the portal here.
Installation Instructions for Users Installing on Computers Not Owned or Managed by Mason

End-User: Download the Installer

  1. Go to our MATLAB Portal, select Sign in to get started under the Get MATLAB and Simulink section.
  2. Log into your MathWorks account that is associated with your University license.Note: you may be asked to log in with your university credentials first.
  3. Select the download button for the current release. (Users can also download previous releases here.).
  4. Choose a supported platform and download the installer.

End-User: Install and Activate

  1. Run the installer.
  2. In the installer, select Log in with a MathWorks Account and follow the online instructions.
  3. When prompted to do so, select the Academic—Total Headcount license labeled Individual.
  4. Select the products you want to download and install.
  5. After downloading and installing your products, keep the Activate MATLAB checkbox selected and select Next.
  6. Follow the prompts to activate MATLAB.

Getting Help

ITS may provide these software applications via Software Center, JAMF, or other endpoint management systems. ITS staff may assist users in installing the application for supported operating systems. ITS staff have not necessarily received training on the application and do not support the functional operation of the application but will refer users to self-support sites, Mason instructors, vendors, or departmental support when known.

Instructions for MATLAB Grader (Blackboard)

Turn it on in a course by going to Control Panel > Customization > Tool Availability and checking the box next to MATLAB Coding Problem. Now MATLAB Coding Problem will appear under the Build Content menu where they add a link to a problem and optionally choose to create a Grade Center column for it.
