Information About Upgrading to MacOS 13 (Ventura)

Earlier this semester, Information Technology Services (ITS) announced full support and adoption of the latest macOS 13 (Ventura) for the Mason community. Apple’s standard is to support the most current and two previous operating system (OS) versions. With the release of Ventura, some Mason-managed computers are now running unsupported versions and must be upgraded.

Mason-Managed Computers
Mac systems not running macOS 11 or higher (i.e., Big Sur, Monterey, or Ventura) must be upgraded by October 2023 or will be removed from the Mason network. Systems requiring upgrading have received notifications requesting users move to the highest OS their systems can support (Note: not all can upgrade to macOS 13). Upgrade instructions are also available at  Mason-Owned & Managed Macs: Supported macOS.

Beginning Monday, June 12, ITS will enforce upgrades, and any systems that have not been upgraded will have seven days after receiving notification to do so. Computers that cannot upgrade to at least macOS 11 may need to be replaced. Please work with your internal purchasing processes for the replacement of incompatible hardware.

As a reminder, university policy requires Mason-owned Macs to be enrolled in Mason Self-Service via Jamf Pro. Doing so ensures your Mac complies with Mason policy and grants you access to on-demand licensed software unavailable to unmanaged Macs. To enroll your Mac, go to https://mac.gmu.edu.

Personal Computers
There is no deadline for upgrading personal devices, but your computer will only receive security patches or functionality updates from Apple if you upgrade. ITS support is limited for computers running unsupported operating systems. You are advised to upgrade to the highest OS your computer can support.

If you encounter any issues or require assistance with this update, please contact the ITS Support Center at 703-993-8870 or support@gmu.edu.
