Back-to-School Tips for Your Best Semester Yet

Welcome back, Patriots! We hope you feel energized and ready to tackle the spring semester ahead. As we enter 2025, now is the perfect time to set yourself up for success to be your best – both mentally and digitally.

Information Technology Services (ITS) is committed to supporting all faculty, staff, and students every step of the way. Check out these five tech tips and explore our resources to kick off the new year right!

1. Stay Organized
We all know how easy it is for digital clutter to pile up, but sometimes we just need a day to clean out and organize our virtual workspace. Start by setting up automatic email rules in Outlook to manage your inbox – no more getting lost in a sea of emails! This will help you automatically sort, organize, or delete incoming emails based on your preferred settings.

Another way to stay organized is to clear out those files that you no longer need and tidy up your downloads folder on your computer. If you have a Mac, utilize the folders in your Finder app, especially if you are juggling multiple roles, projects, or classes. Even the smallest changes to your organizational habits will go far in keeping your mind and your semester on track.

2. Take Care of Your Devices
Let’s show our devices some love! It is important to regularly clean your screens with the appropriate wipes and protect your gear with cases and screen protectors. Whether you are constantly on the go, eating lunch while you work, or sharing your devices with little ones, protecting your tech is an investment worth making. Not only will it save you time and stress in the long run, but it will also help you avoid costly repairs or replacements. Remember to never leave your devices unattended and to keep your screens locked when you aren’t using them.

3. Utilize a Password Manager
It’s time to leave those password notebooks behind and protect your information with a password manager! A password manager is a great tool for securing your personal and academic credentials. While George Mason doesn’t provide a specific password manager app, there are many excellent options out there, both free and premium, that get the job done.

4. Set Healthy Screen Time Limits
While technology is essential in many aspects of life, it’s important to protect your health by not overexposing yourself to screens. Balance is key! Schedule regular breaks to step away from your device and give your eyes, neck, and back a rest. Whether it’s a short walk around campus, a quick workout, or using a standing desk, incorporating physical movement throughout your day can help you stay energized.

Consider investing in blue light glasses to reduce eye strain and protect your eyes from technology’s harmful blue light and utilize digital trackers to set limits on your phone usage. Since it’s easy to fall into endless scrolling on social media, consider setting a time limit to keep your downtime in check. Replace screen time with non-digital activities, like listening to a podcast, reading, or spending time with friends.

5. Lean Into Provided Tech Resources
Do you have projects or assignments that require technology beyond what you own? We have resources on campus that can help! The STAR Lab and the Collaborative Learning Hub (CLUB), both located in the Johnson Center, are spaces to explore, experiment, and create with the latest immersive technology. From video and audio editing to 3D printing, these resources are available to help you bring your ideas to life! To review the resources available to you, visit our Getting Started page.
