Note: This method is not recommended except for courses with basic uses of Blackboard. Read below before using this option to move Blackboard courses to Canvas.
Instructors can manually move courses from Blackboard courses and organizations to Canvas. Please note that compared to the automated migration process, it is possible not everything in Blackboard would be moved to Canvas. Courses that use a simple content structure, contain assignments, discussions, and basic tests may be fine to move manually.
What types of Blackboard courses/organizations are not good candidates for manual migrations?
- Courses with a multiple levels and subfolders of content folders and modules
- Courses that use Kaltura for video or Harmonize for discussions (or any external tool, like a publisher website which deep links to specific locations in the third party application)
- Courses with tests that use question pools, question sets, or random blocks
- Courses which use Blackboard blogs, journals, or wikis
- Courses larger than 5GB or with individual video files larger than 500MB
How do I manually move (Export/Import) a course?
Make sure you have a course in Canvas to move the content into. You can request a new course.
Export your Blackboard course/organization
In Canvas, import the resulting zip file into your course.
