Update: Guidance on New MacOS (Sonoma)

Earlier this semester, Information Technology Services (ITS) announced Monday, January 8, 2024, as the anticipated date for full support of macOS 14 (Sonoma). ITS has tested Sonoma since its release to confirm it can fully support the operations of the Mason community. Therefore, as of January 8, users on Mason-managed Macs will begin receiving notifications to update their systems and may do so at their convenience.

Mason-Managed macOS 11 Computers

Along with the macOS 14 release, Apple discontinued support for macOS 11 (Big Sur). This means any systems running macOS 11 no longer receive security updates. Systems requiring upgrade have received notifications requesting users move to the highest OS their systems can support. As of January 8, ITS will begin removing Mason-managed systems from the Mason network that are running macOS 11 as they present a significant security risk to the university.

Reminder: University policy requires Mason-owned Macs to be enrolled in Mason Self-Service via Jamf Pro. Doing so ensures your Mac complies with Mason policy and grants you access to on-demand licensed software unavailable to unmanaged Macs. To enroll your Mac, go to https://mac.gmu.edu.

Personal Computers

There is no deadline for upgrading personal devices, but your computer will only receive security patches or functionality updates from Apple if you upgrade. ITS support is limited for computers running unsupported operating systems. You are advised to upgrade to the highest OS your computer can support.
