What’s new in Canvas?

Fall 2024

Note: As announced, Canvas will replace Blackboard over the course of the next few semesters.

Canvas
Canvas is here. Instructors can choose Blackboard or Canvas for fall 2024 and spring 2025. View this page to see what integrated tools are available in each system.

As you move to Canvas, several tools in Blackboard will not be in Canvas and have replacements:

  • For plagiarism detection, Safeassign in Blackboard is replaced by Turnitin in Canvas.
  • For online meetings, Collaborate in Blackboard is replaced by Zoom or Microsoft Teams in Canvas.
  • For test integrity, Responds Lockdown Browser in Blackboard is replaced by Honorlock in Canvas.

Class
Class (also known as Class for Zoom) is no longer available.

Class Collaborate
Class Collaborate (previously know as Collaborate Ultra) will not be available after the end the fall 2024 semester. We will send information during the fall to instructors who are linking to Collaborate recordings. These recordings will need to be downloaded or moved to Kaltura or another system. After the fall, instructors should use Zoom in Blackboard.

Kaltura
There are several Kaltura changes in Blackboard. There are slight changes to the options for instructors to add Kaltura video and video quizzes to their courses.

In addition, the Kaltura integration with Blackboard was updated over the system. All links and embedded videos were automatically updated. However, if you encounter a video not working (often displaying the Blackboard homepage where the video should be) you can contact us to fix it or simply delete and then re-add the video from your MyMedia library.

Student Photos/Qwickly Attendance
Student photos are available in the Qwickly Attendance tool. These photos are their official Mason photo from their Mason ID Card, as opposed to their Blackboard or Canvas profile photo which is chosen by the student. These official photos are useful to get to know your students and as a means to verify student identity during exams or other times. Even if you do not plan to take attendance/participation, you can use the tool to view photos.
