Overview
Zoom add-ons are tools built by third-party developers that provide extra features and enhancements. While add-ons are convenient, they pose privacy and security concerns because they are not supported or covered by the core services agreement between George Mason University and Zoom. Each add-on has terms of service that the user is responsible for agreeing to and may unintentionally expose data to the third-party developer.
Hundreds of third-party apps are available to integrate with Zoom, which end-users may view by visiting the Zoom App Marketplace. Currently, ITS is only considering previously Zoom-vetted App Marketplace platforms with well-defined narrow scopes that address accessibility and security. Marketplace App requests for these app integrations are directed to Mason's Zoom Administrators in ITS. ITS will review your app request and refer you to this website for more information on applications that have already been reviewed (approved or denied) by a standards committee at Mason. If the application is not listed on this page, we give more information about the process (below) to get them reviewed.
Before pre-approving and/or installing any app in the Zoom App Marketplace, ITS requires that the add-on be reviewed by the Architectural Standards Review Board (ASRB) via the intake process. The ASRB is comprised of leaders from the IT Security Office, Assistive Technologies Initiative, Finance, etc. This review process attempts to prevent the duplication of services, breaches of security, and accessibility hurdles. In higher education and research, many Zoom add-ons will not be activated by ITS due to security or privacy reasons when the add-on requests to view more Zoom data than is necessary or when it updates and manages Zoom data. Additionally, if an application does not meet accessibility standards, ASRB may suggest an alternative application.
How do I get a third-party app approved?
ITS will pre-approve apps that the ASRB has deemed to have minimal risk associated with the aforementioned concerns and are not duplicative services already offered or supported. In some cases, ASRB has already approved apps as stand-alone applications (without Zoom App Marketplace consideration). If Zoom was not a platform requested at the time of review of the stand-alone product, ASRB must review adding Zoom for expanded use via the Architectural Standards Review Board (ASRB) intake process.
The end-user should still comply with the university's policies for managing sensitive information, such as FERPA, complying with the University Policy Number 1301: Responsible Use of Computing, etc. If you have any security concerns about a third-party application you wish to use, contact the IT Security Office at itsoinfo@gmu.edu.
Note: ITS does not support most third-party add-ons in Zoom. If you encounter issues, contact the applicable vendor(s) for support.

Calendly for Zoom
Calendly integration has been reviewed by ASRB and was pre-approved in the Zoom Marketplace as a stand-alone product. Calendly is available in the Zoom App Marketplace. This is a self-supported tool. ITS is unable to assist with any troubleshooting beyond account access inquiries.
Eventbrite
ASRB has reviewed Eventbrite integration and will not be enabled in the Zoom Marketplace. During the review of this product, ASRB determined that the product had unaddressed accessibility issues for users. This determination is subject to change upon re-review in the future.
Google Workspace (formerly G Suite)
G-Suite integration has been reviewed by ASRB and will not be enabled in the Zoom Marketplace. During the review of this product, ASRB determined that the product required Google credentialing via Zoom. This is forbidden as single sign-on (Mason credentialing) is the supported login method.
HarmonizeEngage
Harmonize is a discussion tool that allows students to communicate, interact, and engage more easily with one another. Harmonize supports media-rich discussions. Contact the Stearns Center for license information.
Kaltura (MyMedia)
The Kaltura (MyMedia) integration was reviewed and approved by ASRB. The integration is already installed and duplicates all Mason Zoom cloud recordings from Licensed users to coursemedia.gmu.edu. This integration is helpful for longer-term storing of videos, distribution to outside viewers, or better integrating the recordings with your Blackboard courses/organizations. For more information about Kaltura and Zoom, see What happens to my Zoom recordings?
LTI Pro (Blackboard)
The LTI Pro (Blackboard) integration was reviewed and approved by ASRB. LTI Pro enables Blackboard/LMS integration and is already installed and offers an easier way for faculty and students to schedule and start their scheduled Zoom meetings/courses. Additionally, Zoom cloud recordings can also be shared temporarily with this integration. See Zoom in Blackboard for Faculty & Staff for more information about Blackboard and Zoom.
Nearpod
Nearpod integration has been reviewed by ASRB and was pre-approved in the Zoom Marketplace as a stand-alone product. Nearpod is available in the Zoom App Marketplace. This is a self-supported tool. ITS is unable to assist with any troubleshooting beyond account access inquiries.
Slack
ASRB has reviewed Slack integration and will not be enabled in the Zoom Marketplace. During the review of Slack, ASRB determined that the product had a feature set comparable to other university-supported collaboration products, such as Microsoft Teams.
What Are Some Alternatives to Zoom Marketplace Apps?
Microsoft Teams
Please see the write-up on Slack in the "Zoom Marketplace Applications Previously Reviewed by the ASRB" section above.
Zoom's Native (Otter.ai) Transcriptions
Otter.ai and Rev Live Captioning are commonly requested live transcription integrations. Zoom already offers live transcription powered by Otter.ai's language engine and can be enabled via these instructions. If you require a more robust suite of tools, please proceed to the "How do I get a third-party app approved?" section above or consult Mason's Assistive Technologies Initiative for other practical solutions.
What should I do next?
If your Zoom Marketplace App is not listed above, submit your use case to the ASRB with all supporting documentation mentioned in the "How do I get a third-party app approved?" section above. If you are a customer of a company that was not approved for reasons other than duplicative services (e.g., apps that utilize broad permissions, risks site-wide or user-level security, contain unaddressed accessibility flaws, etc.), you are encouraged to ask the company to rethink their Zoom integration with Mason's concerns in mind. If at any time you would like to speak with a Zoom administrator at Mason or would like guidance on approved tools, please email gmuzoom@gmu.edu or contact the ITS Support Center.
Collaboration Collective
There is a grassroots Mason community of technology users interested in helping each other with the abundant collaboration tools available. The Collaboration Collective is a team for Mason's collaboration technology users to communicate with their peers and discuss new features, best practices, and other topics of interest about the following ITS-supported collaboration tools: Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Class Collaborate. This is not intended to replace submitting an issue via the ITS Support Center. The Collaboration Collective is moderated by members of the Mason community and ITS. To become a member of the Collaboration Collective, log in to Microsoft Teams, click Join or create a Team, and then search for "Collaboration Collective" or use Join a team with a code (code: pifyqb4).
