There are many ways to share content with other faculty in Canvas. These are some options and the benefits they each afford.
Direct Share
Benefits
Direct Share does not require any course access between parties. This works well if you only want to send a few pieces of content and maintains the integrity of your copy. If Professor A wants to send content to Professor B, they select and send only that content. Professor B then has access only to what's shared and can choose a course to import the content into.
Instructions
Many content items can be sent via Direct Share including:
- Announcements
- Assignments
- Discussions
- Modules
- Pages
- Quizzes
Step 1
To send an assignment to another instructor, follow the instructions at How do I send an assignment to another instructor? Other content types are shared similarly using Send To...
Step 2
Once sent, the receiving instructor follows the instructions at How do I manage content shared to me from other users? to view and manage content.
Create Development Courses as Repositories
Benefits
To export and import between courses, a person would have to be enrolled in both courses in the teacher role or similar. This would give the instructor access, but also means that instructor could modify the original. Further, depending on the type of course, individuals may not be able to add new users. Instead, you can use development courses or sandboxes as a permanent repository to which you can add whoever needs access. This works well if you want to share a larger collection, such as an entire course.
Instructions
Step 1
Create a separate course repository by requesting a new course via the ITS Canvas Help Form. Generally, this will be a development course for a specific course. Optionally, review the Canvas Course Types for other choices.
Step 2
Copy the original course into the new course shell using How to Import/Copy Course Content in Canvas as a guide.
Step 3
Once populated, add the second instructor to the new course shell using instructions at Canvas User Roles and Adding Users to Courses. They can now copy either the entire course or specific content as needed. Note: Other users will be able to edit/delete content in the course as well.
Canvas Commons
Benefits
Canvas Commons is a learning object repository that enables educators to find, import, and share resources. It allows users to share learning resources with other users as well as import learning resources into a Canvas course.
Instructions
Many content items can be shared in Canvas Commons including:
- Assignments
- Courses
- Discussions
- Modules
- Pages
- Quizzes
Step 1 (optional)
Canvas Commons allow you to share with yourself, all of George Mason, or public (meaning all institutions/organizations using Canvas Commons). To limit access to a group within George Mason, contact ITS using the ITS Request Form. This should be done before sharing to Canvas Commons.
Step 2
Share content following the instructions at How do I share a resource to Commons? Be mindful sharing options and content licensing to be sure to limit access to your intended audience.
Step 3
For others to retrieve content from Canvas Commons, they should follow the instructions at How do I import and view a Commons resource in Canvas?
Export/Import Course ZIP File
Benefits
You can export a Canvas course to give to someone in another Canvas account, to upload to another institution's account at a later date, or to create a copy as a backup on your local computer. This is also the easiest way to give access to entire previous semester course.
Instructions
Step 1
Export following the instructions at How do I export a Canvas course?
Step 2
Share with another instructor using your preferred method so they can import, or simply import in another institution's Canvas instance, following the instructions at How do I import a Canvas course export package?
