Wired network service for the Fairfax campus was unavailable. Wireless services were not affected.

Initial symptoms: 

Datacenter received calls  reporting outages from multiple places in the Fairfax campus.

Impact to Mason: 

Wired network access was unavailable to users in some cases due to DHCP lease expiration and non-renewal.

Affected Services: 
ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS
Cause: 

The outage was caused by a set of files that were deleted/missing from a DHCP server. We have submitted a ticket to the vendor to investigate a possible bug that may have removed these settings.

Resolution: 

The missing settings were put back and DHCP service restored immediately after.

Prevention: 

We limit elevated privileges to only a few engineers to prevent unintentional changes to critical settings. We also have protocols in place to quickly reach point of contacts whose can address issues at a moment’s notice.
