Virtual Connection and Instruction with Webex

Like many universities in response to Covid-19, George Mason University transitioned to remote learning and working environments in March. This transition meant many Patriots were suddenly turning to technology in new or different ways to help the Mason community remain successful and resilient.

Many turned to collaborative tools during this time for online meetings and collaboration. This included the online Webex tools from Cisco that have kept faculty, staff, and students connected during work from home, online classes, and even a virtual happy hour or birthday celebration!

Webex Meetings

This cloud-based web conferencing tool allows users to share video, audio, and content online, while providing collaboration in and outside of Mason. Key features of Meetings include hosting/joining calls, recording/playback, and presenting content. Each Webex account holder has a “personal room,” which serves as your own virtual space for meetings at any time. These spaces use HD video conferencing for face-to-face meetings, and you can share your entire desktop with all participants of the call.

Webex Teams

Primarily used for collaboration, this tool helps progress projects, maintain and build relationships across Mason, and resourcefully solve business problems. The member who creates the space will be named a “moderator,” and both Webex and ITS suggest electing a second moderator for contingency purposes. Teams is available 24/7, providing a constant and secure work space where members can contribute anytime, from any device. While customizable to the user, all files and messages are automatically saved for each member to enable quick access of important information.

With any technology, there is the chance that something may not go as planned. If you run into any issues while using Webex, ITS has you covered!

  • Visit the ITS Testing and Troubleshooting Tips page about related issues like poor audio or network connection, failure to join, or trouble with scheduling meetings.
  • If looking for further support, the ITS Support Center is available to assist you in navigating this new virtual learning environment via 703-993-8870 or support@gmu.edu.

For the most updated information on Mason technology during these times, the ITS Working Remotely page provides guidance on maintaining continuity online.

Note: All employees hired as of or before March 10, 2020, have been given Webex Meetings and Teams accounts. Employees hired after this date can submit requests for Webex Meetings and Teams accounts via the ITS website. Webex desktop apps are available for download via https://gmu.webex.com, and mobile apps are available from apple and android app stores.
