Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise: Fixing the “Device Limit Reached” Message

Step 1

Open Your Microsoft Office Portal

Step 2

Select Apps and Device

Step 3

Click the arrow next to “Device” under “Office” to drop down all your currently logged in Microsoft Office Activations.

Step 4

Sign out of any unused systems

  • Find the device you no longer need
  • Choose Sign out
  • Confirm the sign out

This does not uninstall Office, it only deactivates the license on that device

Step 5

Return to the New Device

  • Go back to Word, Excel, or Outlook
  • Select Try again or Sign in when prompted
  • Office will activate successfully

What Happens to a Removed Device?

After removal:

  • Office apps stay installed
  • Files remain on the device
  • Office switches to view‑only mode on that device
  • This state is called Reduced Functionality Mode

You can still:

  • Open files
  • View documents
  • Print

You cannot:

  • Edit files
  • Create new documents

How to Reactivate a Device Again

To reactivate:

  1. Open any Office app
  2. Sign in with your George Mason email
  3. Office will reactivate (if a device slot is available)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does uninstalling Office free up a device slot?

No. You must remove the device through your Microsoft account portal.

Will I lose any files?

No. Your files are stored in OneDrive, SharePoint, or locally on your device.

Does this affect Office on the web?

No. Office on the web is always available and does not count toward device limits.

Why does Microsoft enforce this?

Microsoft 365 uses per‑user licensing, not per‑device licensing. Device limits help ensure secure, compliant usage across environments.

When Should I Contact IT Support?

Contact ITS only if:

  • You accidentally removed your current device and cannot sign back in
  • You cannot access the device list
  • You see activation errors after removing a device
