Honorlock for Instructors

Honorlock is an automated proctoring solution that helps instructors foster academic integrity when providing remote assessments to students.

For detailed instructions and a walkthrough, view the full help guide and video from Honorlock: View the full help guide and video from Honorlock.

  1. Please note: Before you can use Honorlock, you must make it visible in your course menu. To do this, go to your course Settings page, select Navigation, and move Honorlock to the visible section.
  2. Then enable Honorlock for your exam by following Honorlock's Using Honorlock with Canvas tutorial.

Important Notes

  • Exams in courses copied from a previous semester will be disabled in Honorlock by default. Open Honorlock in the course site for the current term and enable it for needed quizzes.
  • Never modify or remove the code that Honorlock places in the Canvas "Access Code" box. This is automatically populated by Honorlock and is used to control access to the exam by the automated proctoring system. Modifying the code will cause Honorlock to fail, preventing students from accessing the exam. If you have edited the access code, you will need to disable and then re-enable Honorlock for a new code to be generated.
  • Students must use the Chrome browser, and will be required to install the Honorlock Chrome extension. Depending on settings, students may also need to download the Honorlock application (see below). We suggest you provide students with a no/low stakes quiz that uses youe expected Honorlock settings at the beginning of the semester.

New: Block/Allow Apps (Honorlock Application)

Depending on your chosen settings, Honorlock records the student's screen and flags instances when a student leaves the test window (such as opening another browser window or application). If you want to fully block students from using anything else on their computer, or you want to block everything except one or two applications, use the Block/Allow Apps option. This Honorlock page describes various scenarios and when to use this option. This option will require the students to download a Windows/Mac Honorlock Application to their computer. Like the Chrome extension, students are automatically prompted to install the application before the exam begins.

  • The Block/Allow Apps option (which requires students to install the Honorlock application) works with Windows and Macs only - a quiz with this option will not work with Chromebooks.
  • This Honorlock Application guide for students provides additional details.
  • It is highly recommended you have a practice exam with the Block/Allow Apps settings to ensure students can downloaded the application on their Mac or Windows computer.

General Tips

  • Ensure students are aware of your Honorlock requirement early in the course or on the syllabus.
  • You may want to include "(Honorlock)" at the end of the test names so students are aware of the Honorlock requirement
  • In the "Test Taker Guidelines" section of Honorlock quiz options, choose exactly what students can or cannot use during the exam. Honorlock's pop-in proctors will use these guidelines to ensure students are following your test rules.
  • Create a practice quiz for students so they use Honorlock once before using it for an actual test. Use the "Simulated -Not Proctored" option.
  • Send students our student tips with Honorlock page, this includes links for the HonorPrep checker to ensure students are ready to go.
  • Encourage students to use the chat function inside Honorlock if they encounter any technical issues.
