MicroStrategy UAT Environment Problems

We were having problems with the database server for the UAT environment the morning of Friday, 21 June.  The impact was that the server was slow and unresponsive, and the data loads did not complete.  The problem has been fixed.  The database was stopped and restarted at 10:45a.  The data loads were restarted shortly thereafter, but will not complete today for some of the data marts.  Data in any data marts except those mentioned below will be as of 19 June until the Saturday, 22 June data refreshes run.

  • Finance Data Mart — reload complete as of noon refresh
  • Admissions Data Mart — reload complete as of 3:20 pm

Changes Regarding Access to MicroStrategy

Effective Tuesday, June 25, 2019, users of MicroStrategy who access the system from off-campus or via a Wi-Fi network that is not MASON-SECURE, are required to use Mason’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) with Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). Users accessing MicroStrategy via a computer connected to Mason’s wired network (except Mason Korea) or the MASON-SECURE Wi-Fi network are not affected.

Please review the following information to help you prepare for this change:

Ensure you have the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client

  • Users on university-managed computers: the Cisco AnyConnect client software needed to connect to the VPN is available on all university-managed computers in the Software Center (MESA) or in Mason Self Service (Jamf Pro).
  • Users not on managed computers: you will need to download the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client. Follow these instructions to get the Cisco AnyConnect client:

Log in to the VPN

  • Once you have the AnyConnect client, log in using your NetID and Patriot Pass Password (2FA required).
  • Instructions on How to Use 2FA with VPN.
  • All Mason employees are required to be enrolled in 2FA. If you are not enrolled in 2FA, visit Enrolling in 2FA.

Log in to MicroStrategy

Once you are connected to the VPN, visit the MicroStrategy website to log in with your NetID and Patriot Pass Password as usual.

Adobe Shockwave Removal (Windows Only)

Effective April 9, 2019, Adobe has discontinued Adobe Shockwave player. Commonwealth of Virginia’s security standards require that the software plug-in be removed from all Mason-owned computers by Monday, July 8, 2019. Information Technology Services (ITS) will be removing Shockwave from all managed computers to meet the July deadline. For instructions on how to remove Shockwave from unmanaged computers by the July deadline, visit https://helpx.adobe.com/shockwave/kb/download-shockwave-stand-alone-installer.html. This change does not affect classroom or lab computers. For additional information, visit the Adobe website: https://helpx.adobe.com/shockwave/shockwave-end-of-life-faq.html.

MicroStrategy UAT Environment Performance Problems

We had performance problems in UAT today.  The server was rebooted at 10:00a, which fixed the problem.  However, the performance issues caused data load delays.  All data was loaded by 4:00p.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at [email protected].
