Service Summary
The Mason network uses firewalls to protect university systems against unauthorized access and malicious attacks. Firewall security configuration is adjusted to accommodate university business. Firewall changes are generally made in the context of IT projects, but may be independently requested to accommodate the addition, change, or removal of public-facing systems, services, or applications.
All servers or other systems that offer public-facing services or applications connected to the Mason network must be registered with Information Technology Services. Access to secure services and applications is limited to authorized users only.

Getting This Service
Firewall protection is automatic. Please submit a request to register a server with ITS or to request a firewall change to accommodate the addition, change, or removal of a public-facing system, service, or application. This process will require engagement with ITS to assess communication and security requirements of the system, service, or application and to engineer the appropriate firewall security posture. Firewall changes following this process are made on Wednesday afternoons following the engagement and completion of all assessment and engineering tasks.
Availability
This service is available 24/7. Changes or provision of server space is available during regular business hours.
