Email service for George Mason alumni is changing to an email forwarding service.
The alumni email migration project does not impact current George Mason students or employees.
Starting in 2025, alumni will lose access to their email accounts. Once an account is deactivated, alumni will no longer be able to sign in to that mailbox or access any email or content stored within it. George Mason will instead offer an @gmualumni.org email forwarding service that forwards messages to a non-George Mason email address of your choice (ex. Gmail, Hotmail, etc.). This forwarding service is not an email inbox and does not include email storage, sending capabilities, or access to any content from the former @gmu.edu account. Emails, files, contacts, calendars, and other data stored in the university account will not be transferred to or accessible through the @gmualumni.org forwarding address and must be saved before the @gmu.edu account is deactivated.
Why is this change happening?
There have been multiple email solutions for George Mason alumni over the years. To simplify the service and maintain adequate email security, ITS partnered with the Office of Alumni Relations to identify a new solution for all alumni, past, present, and future.
In 2023, Microsoft announced changes to storage licenses, making it too costly to maintain the current email solution for all alumni. The new email forwarding solution allows alumni to stay connected to the university.
What will happen to my email account?
The new service allows alumni to receive email to an @gmualumni.org address that will be forwarded to a non-Mason email address of their choosing (such as Gmail, Hotmail, etc.). Your current name in front of @gmu.edu or @masonlive.gmu.edu will be used for the @gmualumni.org address.
For MasonLive Email Accounts
Starting in fall 2025, the first phase of alumni with email accounts on MasonLive received communication regarding the change and option to claim the new email forwarding service. In spring 2026, the remaining group of alumni with email accounts on MasonLive received communication regarding the change.
All MasonLive email accounts will be deleted.
For @GMU.edu Email Accounts
If you are a current George Mason student or employee, your @gmu.edu email account is not impacted by this change. You do have the opportunity to claim your alumni email forwarding address.
Alumni with @gmu.edu addresses are receiving invite windows to sign up for the new forwarding service. After the invite window has ended, alumni accounts will be closed and then deleted.
For Future Alumni
Starting in 2027, students graduating will maintain their @gmu.edu email account for a period of time before it is closed. During that time, new alumni will be able to opt into the email forwarding service and claim their @gmualumni.org address.
For Alumni With @gmualumni.org Forwarding
Alumni who already have an @gmualumni.org email address were not impacted by this change. Your mail continued to be forwarded to your already established @gmualumni.org email address.
