As George Mason University transitions its course materials operation to eCampus, much of the work is happening behind the scenes in Information Technology Services (ITS).
Conversations with project leaders show that what may appear to be a bookstore transition is also a larger technology effort to build the infrastructure supporting the future of course materials at George Mason.
Daffeyo Tubman, Operational Finance & Enterprise Governance (OFEG) Project Manager, and Mary Lulis, Data Integrations Manager, are helping lead the ITS effort to connect Banner, the university’s student information system, with eCampus. Through those integrations, ITS provides the student, course, instructor, and section data that powers the platform. This behind-the-scenes work helps faculty identify the right courses and sections, then add books and other course materials in the system.
ITS also supports the university’s single sign-on (SSO) service, enabling students, faculty, and staff to access eCampus using their university credentials through a streamlined login experience. This piece is essential to making the transition work smoothly.
Adam Basinger, Director of Auxiliary Services, emphasized that this project is central to the long-term future of course materials delivery. For ITS, the work is helping build the digital backbone that will support how course materials are managed, accessed, and delivered moving forward.
The impact is campuswide, as course materials affect nearly every student and instructor. For ITS, the immediate priority is making sure the basics are strong: reliable integrations, accurate data, and stable access. That groundwork could also support future enhancements, including a later phase that could allow eligible students to use financial aid toward bookstore purchases.
