Upcoming Microsoft Storage Changes

As cloud storage utilization has increased, vendors have responded by re-configuring their service offerings and storage pricing, making providing free storage no longer sustainable for higher ed institutions.

To optimize our storage growth, Information Technology Services (ITS) conducted a formal review of our Microsoft 365 (M365) system storage and will be implementing changes this year.

The analysis found that approximately 90% of users are operating within 5GB or less of storage in our current M365 environment. As a result, new storage quotas will be implemented to manage further growth starting this summer.

Additionally, in an effort to mitigate security risk, all current lifecycle account policies for data retention will be assessed. To prepare for potential changes, please review your data with the guides and information provided by the Office of Records Management.

In the coming weeks, impacted users will receive direct communications from ITS on what to expect and how to prepare. For updated project details, see the M365 Storage Roadmap.

To provide further support, the Collaboration Collective MS Team – Microsoft Storage Project channel is available as a forum for collaboration with peers regarding changes to M365 cloud storage.
