At approximately 02:25 PM on 05/16/23, George Mason University experienced a brief network (both Wired and Wireless) outage.

Initial symptoms: 
Internet access was lost at some locations (on campus and remote users on VPN), based on what fiber lines were connecting the campuses.

Impact to Mason: 

Users had intermittent connectivity to the internet (wired or wireless) for a short period of time.

Network Access, Wireless (Wi-Fi) Network, Virtual Private Network (VPN)
ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS
Cause: 

A non-related group was drilling and cut our vendor’s fiber connections.

Resolution: 
Vendor sent repair crews to site. Mason’s internet was restored by failing over to back-up fiber connections while vendor was making repairs.
Prevention: 

Mason has dual connections for all campuses to limit exposure in this type of incident.
